Felting drawers

Based on what I read Hide glue was used as to not to rust drawer bottoms. As you can see the bottoms are metal . Gluing was a bit more difficult than anticipated .Too much it soaks through the felt .Too little, the strips fall off.

Step 2-Tool Box

After two bleaches with Oxalic acid and many washes with cold water,I let it dry .I then put a quick coat of 50/50 amber shellac.Let it dry and then rubbed on some red oak stain. Its drying as these pictures were taken. All the drawers have to be re felted with green felt and hide glue. A final few coats of Water-Lox and will put up the final pictures.

Tool Chest continued

The chest was badly water and oil stained. Its waiting for a delivery of oxalic acid and some hide glue. The hide glue will be used to glue in new felt in the bottom of each drawer and the top. That way the glue will not rust the metal bottoms.
With oxalic acid ,I hoping to bleach the wood to a consistent color. Then I will either apply linseed oil and a shellac finish or a stain and a satin poly .I'm hoping the first choice works I will of course test it on some scape pieces.

Machinist's Tool Chest

I inherited a number of tools from my father in law, who passed away earlier this yr.Among the tools was an old wooden tool chest in desperate repair.I know I should have left it alone but its was heading for the dumpster when I grabbed it.Its not a Gerstner, its a Star . Parts are hard to find and match .I'm putting these up a bit late. I should have posted what it looked like the day I brought it home. Progress to follow .All light piece are new red oak which I salvaged from a couple of 100 yr old tables heading to the land fill as well.

Osage orange. Planted extensively before the invention of barbed wire. There are a few hedges around here. Left over from the old days .They are few and far between .You can always find them in the fall when there is the occasional "Planet" hanging from a branch.

Next Years Garlic

One of the gardening sites I go to said that about 70% of all garlic in the US is from China.True of not I'm trying it for the first time ever.
Instead of looking at my feeble attempt watch this.

My Mother is Smiling Somewhere

All the vegetables I wouldn't eat as a kid

It Never Ends

Why am I not fishing or tooling around in my trailer? That house I built 22 yrs ago is worse than having a boat.
They say that a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into .At least you are doing something enjoyable. This is just the beginning of about a 6 month project of fixing up the old girl. All the lattice was ripped on the table saw and individually nailed by hand .I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment
JUST SPRAY STAIN!!!!

Hummingbirds( continued)

No film at eleven even though I tried .For most of the week I have had at least 3 different birds hanging around .I say three because that is the most I have seen at the feeders at one time.
Today a constant two with at least 20 sightings
They will all be gone in a few weeks to parts south.

It almost time for the Run

I made a few new plugs this year,I have enough for all the remaining fishing years I have left .I have poppers ,swimmers, Pencil plugs and a wide variety of tins .Now the fish have to show up along the beach.
This type of fishing is my fishing of choice. On calm days out comes the 10 wgt. fly rod. I have to start tying some new deceivers.
Someone advised me that my backing is obsolete so I have to go get a few spools of this new gel stuff

Compost Bin

The gardening books always say to add compost to everything .I don't know where they get it all.I built this last yr after seeing a video on you tube.
This contains all the material from all our beds and gardens plus household scraps. Whenever it its done I will be lucky to have a wheel barrow or two .Its all going to go in the vegetable garden

A look at some of my fruit trees

The trees around my little orchard are getting too big .Some of the fruit trees don't get enough sun.The first pic is of my lone apple on the Delicious hybrid.Followed by a bumper crop of Bell of Georgia peaches. The next three are pears an Asian whose name is Shinseiki ,a lone Bartlett on a tree planted last year, and again another bumper crop on my Atlantic queen.
I have to decide how many surrounding trees to take down .
My peaches are all over 20 yrs old which is about 140 in peach tree life .Decisions have to be made as to how many need to be replaced next spring
