Us

There is too much bass around on all the restaurants menus around here to be ranch raised or "wild local bass" .The only law that governs the harvest of these fish is the law of supply and demand. As long as there is a demand these fish will find there way to the table legally or not.
If the number of fish is decreasing this time around it our fault not the commercial harvester.

Gone but not forgotten

After searching the photos in my library this was the only photo I could find of my old boat .It was a 23 'center console Seaway .I bought it in 1985 .After 10 yrs of pounding the waters of eastern long island it needed new stringers as well as a few other things.Like a new motor
It was one of those projects that was always on the back burner and I realized it probably was going to stay there.
I was approached by a guy who was raising oysters about selling it .Shit I have owned it for 24 yrs and its has been sitting on blocks waiting for me for the last 10.
While I was away in Maine ,hunting ,I called the guy and told him he could have it ."How much?" "oh some oysters every so often will do."
Its gone for a half a bushel of the little gems. After all these yrs it was either spend 10 or 15 thousand or let it go .My sons wanted to cut it up and actually offered to pay for the dumpster .
I now have 5 quarts of oyster stew and a little more room in the drive.Hopefully by spring she'll be back on the bay .Now I'll just be roaming the beaches

With the help of Ebay I have bought pieces that I never had or that have worn out.
I have the extension arms and another rip fence track. It also was given a new baldor motor. With some modifications and a new pulley its ready to go for the next 60 yrs.

Taking Time

As mentioned in a few previous post ,this has been a busy summer.6 and 7 day weeks have been the norm since the middle of April
Tonight I took some time to just take a walk around the grounds. After a disastrous spring vegetables are growing .Actually planted a row of collard greens.Probably too late but they are in the ground
Off in the distance I heard my first Great Horned Owl of the fall(late summer).I hope he helps eradicate a few of the rabbits that have eaten through the fence around the garden and are eating all my late greens
The most important thing I noticed was that the bees were every where pollinating the raspberries .All of the bees were bumble bees .I did not see one honey bee in the hundreds that were out there.
We are putting up the nets tomorrow in the hopes of getting a few berries before the catbirds find their way in.

RUDY

These are not my words. They are from the Drake

If the face of a dog can't get you, what can? I always pretended to be tough, like I was really going to train him.Teach him some good discipline."Does your dog get human food?".No.Absolutely never unless he looks at me just the right way,in which case he may end up with a slab of salmon right off the plate."Is he a good fishing dog?"well that depends. If by"good fishing dog"you mean he jumps in the water to get fish, occasionally runs downstream, and always gets forgiven, then yes he's a great fishing dog.

I put my lab down two weeks ago .13 yrs with me on every fishing trip I took.
He did get a keeper bass once and retrieved more than a few pheasants

300 miles today

Left the house this AM at 6:30 to pick up a 16 passenger van in NJ.Drove 10 mile to town. Picked up the Jitney to Manhattan. 3hrs later was standing on the corner of 86th and 3rd waiting for a limo .5 min. later it took me to Little Ferry NJ to get the van.Hopped in the van drove the 120 miles back to the Shelter Island ferry .A 20 min ride later I was on the Island. Dropped off the van.Back to the ferry as a walk on .Got off the boat and walked 500 ft to my truck that I had left off 8.5 hrs earlier and was home buy 3:30
Whew!!!, that was a long day.

New Fans

I think I have posted this picture before. With all the rain we have had this spring I just wanted to say that these fan-tastics have worked perfectly .They must open a close all day long with every passing shower.Yesterday it rained all day and they were closed tight as a whales ass! ( water tight) .This morning when I left for work before the sun was completely up they were open and ready to go .I just walked past them on my way in and they are circulating air beautifully.

Rhodos

This is the same rhodo seen in the feeder post .How could any Hummingbird resist? I don't even know if the feed on the nectar . Most rhodos and azaleas have toxins in them

Hummingbirds

I just love these little buggers. Things have been cool and damp this spring .I don't know if this has led to a shortage of them .There are plenty of flowers around but I only see a female very early in the AM and just before dark .I know they have to eat all day long so I have no idea where they go .
Maybe they are feeding on the real thing during the day

Its May Already?

For the few followers, I have not fallen off the face of earth.I have been busy as hell .I had to try something that has been bothering me for as long as I have been blogging.
I WENT BACK TO WORK!!!!!
I had to see if I could still do it .
I saw an add in the paper for a handy man .Simple enough. Light work and I could make a few Franklin's to help pay for my projects.Well I started on 4/15 and I have been working 7 days/week since I started .8 to 10 hrs. I'm sad to admit that its kicking my ass .I come home and plop my butt in the chair and don't move .
After 3 weeks I thought I would be feeling better but it will take a little more time than I thought to get back in shape ,I keep reminding myself that I sat on my ass for almost a yr.
The globetrotter is on the list to finish after I paint a few rooms .Actually my wife is painting in my absence but I have to spackle all those popped screw /nail heads and repair a few feet of loose tape.
The blues and bass are here and I'll get a birds eye view of them as they pass by the porch I'm re-screening.
Things should slow down after June .Then I'll see if I can get away to go upstate to the Vintage Trailer Jam
( to be continued)

Amazing

I read somewhere that there are about 3000 of these guys left in the wilds around Florida. Yesterday I took a ride up to homasassa springs with the idea I might see a couple .There is a spring in a state park that pumps out 3,000,000 gals of 72F waterpre hour 24/7.
I counted 60 and I counldn't get very far, stuck on land .If I did my math right that's 2% of the entire population in a 1/4 mile stretch of river.
Amazing!!!!
The river was also loaded with all kinds of fish 100's if not thousands of snook ,redfish tail mangrove snapper .They were all in a no fish zone.
Truly amazing

Shadow Country

History of Aripeka, Florida
The picture on the left is where I'm heading with my wife for a few months.Yes months.
Hopefully the fish aren't driven away by any cold weather .I'm leaving all tow vehicles and boats behind .
Where I'm staying is just out of the left of the picture
I'm packing my copy of Shadow Country along with 5 fishing poles .I don't know whats going to be available to me but you will probabley find me on one of the fishing bridges that lead to the island most any morning

Christmas Bird Count

Christmas Bird Count
Tomorrow is the Orient bird count, Dawn till dust .I've missed the last few years .I have been doing it since 1971 .I used to do 3 /yr .This years trip to Gardiners Island was canceled because of the gale warning and the ensuing gale.
I'll be the guy driving around the neighborhood with the windows opened in the truck blasting owl calls from the tape player in the truck @5 in the morning
